I thought maybe some of you might enjoy some good humor with regards to how my "Crystal Ball" forcast's the running of the Kentucky Derby 134. You may edit any way you wish, but in it's original form it's sent yearly to those of whom I meet every year at the Derby.
Here we go;
Last year I thought it was a gift with SS, this year it promises to be a wheel barrel hauling event. If the Derby Tri pays less than $3000, I'll be shocked. Did anyone get a feel for the winner out of the Wood, Illinois, Ark. or BG, I think not. That's why you have me, plus (31) years of humilty trying to pick the winner. I watch and watch and watch the preps - take notes - listen to the excuses from the jockeys and trainers - then watch them again. I watch the preps in reverse, just in case the gate opens in the wrong direction(anything can happen on derby day). So unless the Illinios derby winner is the next coming of War Emblem, this race shaped up quite simply.
THEY'RE OFF: Rocket launch beginning - War Pass, Gayego, Recapturethe glory, Big Brown, Bob Black Jack and a couple other maniacs clobbering each other into the 1st turn.
1/4 to the 1/2 - 21:4/ 45:0 - War Pass clears the field and open up by (3) lenghts - Gayego, Recaptur., Bob Black Jack and the Maniacs chasing in futility - Big Brown backs off the chase - the others back off to try and catch their breath(I've never seen a oxygen tank on the back stretch).
The 2nd Tier of horses - Z Fortune, Colonel John, Monba, Cool Coal Man - the others are pretenders that wanted to go early - but found they weren't quick enough - and have also realized they hate their owners for putting them in this ridiculous situation.
The Closers - are far far back - Visionaire, Pyro, Smooth Air, Tomcito and others(Our derby contingent shakes hands with these jockeys as they go buy on the backstretch, wishing them well).
1/2 to the Far turn - 6f in 1:09:2 - War pass is alone by (5) lengths - CHASING are Gayego, Bob Black Jack, w/ Big Brown beginning to cut into that margin. No Derby was won at the 6f marker, but someone has to go after War Pass.
The 2nd wave is licking their chops - someone is sitting on a lot of horse - Colonel John is moving prematurely, thinking he has to track Big Brown. Cool Coal Man and Z Fortune are moving up gradually - taking small chunks w/o expending to much energy.
The Closers - They all better get their running shoes on. There's going to be a lot of traffic on the far turn. There will be NO ROOM on the rail this year. They better keep their heads up, there is going to be some quick stoppers at this junction.
Far Turn to the Stretch - 1m in 1:34:0(SMOKIN) - War Pass by a diminishing (2) lengths - Big Brown has overhauled the chasers - Colonel John is close behind - Cool Coal Man and Z Fortune are moving forward easily as a team - Smooth air and Visionaire are in high gear, but still (5) lengths back - Pyro has reached contention, but tries the rail route and gets shut off.
DOWN THE STRETCH THEY COME - Big Brown assumes command from War Pass(whose legs are starting to do the E. Presley wobble), but is startled and veers out sharply from the crowd noise - Colonel John dives to inside for his run - All (3) are soon engulfed by Cool Coal Man and Z Fortune w/ Smooth air and Visionaire in full flight - Pyro has finally shooken clear and starting to pick up major steam.
Inside the 1/8th pole - Z Fortune amd Cool Coal Man are head and head - Visionaire has inched ahead of Smooth Air - Pyro is flying in the middle of the track.
THE WINNER IS - Z Fortune/ 2nd - Visionaire with a (3) way photo for 3rd.
That was fun - I need a Mint Julip - SDI1958/ Tall Stevebf.
