As a newbie,,,,, it can become a little overwhelming listening to the guy(gal) in front of you playing a "one, five over the six, ten, eight slash wheel the four for 10 dollars" bet,,,,,,,,then you proceed to the window to place your "2 dollars across the board on the five please" huge gamble.

This site does a great job of informing the rookie bettor (via the forums), but a live "hands on" explanation would be a nice thing to see.

Heck, Steve, you should just bring me out to the track and let me gamble your money away as an example!!!!:D :D :D

Always an enjoyable site, thanks. Dave

Since this is in "General Racing", It should be a very nice looking studio, with wall pitcures of famous racehorses.
The show itself would be an introduction to and instruction for handicapping and betting, using programs, PP's and results charts, along with video of recent stakes races and custom shots of the paddock, post parade, teller area, etc.
If part of the show was on early speed, changing leads, or trip handicapping, a recent race would be shown with lessons reinforced by viewing the race. (Closeups would be great!) You could even show a past famous race once in a while to make a point. Part of the show can highlight upcoming races and handicapping/ betting strategy for them. It would be great if a guest would be a jockey or connection of an upcoming contender and something related to the episode's lessons.

the show is on the road, Mr. Steve. Let's see the trainers' get interviews as well as owners and jocks.. Let's see the trainers stables, what their days are like.. let's see the regular guy owner and how he foots the bill and why he likes it.. let's see the rider who is tossing and neglecting his body to feed his wife and kids who rely on him to win.. it doesnt always have to be pretty just real with feeling.

First, I would want a segment dedicated to improving our handicapping. An occasional visit from one of the greats, like Steve Davidowitz, Andy Beyer, Mark Cramer etc. would certainly help!
Next, I would like to see the human factor portrayed, namely, the team work and cooperation necessary for getting a horse to the races. Interviews with not only trainers, but their assistants, grooms, exercise riders, hotwalkers,etc..
And finally, a video review of the biggest and most exciting races of the week- something to get the heart racing!

ESPN used to have a weekly show, maybe they still do but I haven't seen it in the listings. bh)

Locally, cable airs a show from Philly Park hosted by track announcer Keith Jones. It's only aired like twice a week and unless you make it a point you may never see it. Mainly, they recap the nations big races and talk about the up-coming big ones. There is a segment with local track news also.

I don't think just watching race replays attracts a very big audience. although, I never tier of seeing and hearing Secretariat win the Belmont.

Girls in bikinis seems to work well. Maybe girls in bikinis riding horses. I would watch that. do; a:

Steve , Can't wait for the show to begin, lotta great ideas here...Like the ideas of trainers and jockeys, may I caution as a regular at the Morning Glory some of these guys are extremely difficult to understand especially the jockeys...Not knowing Cara's horses racing knowledge, might be a good idea to get her learning some of the lingo...You may also want to have a segment on horseshoes, shadowrolls, and blinkers...As a matter of fact I beleive I read an article about Lava Man who just won two $1 million dollar races and trains with a special plate that is removed before racing...
Maybe a segment on what ever happened to racing greats Cauthen,Codereo,Bailey,Day..to name just a few...........Anatomy of a horse? What is it to pinfire or blister a horse? Pinhooking? Perhaps a section on reading conditions of races...What I would probably do with all this is to take a vote of what the majority would like to see and hear about and try to set up the shows based on that..........Everyone here has different skill and knowledge levels..Perhaps Larry or Mark Lowe, could do a segment on how they handicap a race and their key decisions in doing so.. Thanks for the wonderful site, contests and forums.........Rudy

what ive noticed in the industry is the lack of the younger generation.
they all seem to know the celebs.so maybe a once a month interview with with someone they might know of such joe pesci, the boss steinbrenner and others even some celbs that horses were named after.
also go to different tracks show what the track looks like.mainly ones that could be of a family interest.
a call in line for the viewers.
where did horse racing come from? a little history.
also a day to day of different workers at the track.

Rotate through them all. Bring a little love to the little tracks. Everybody knows how great the big guys are. We've all seen ESPN do live shows from Santa Anita and Gulfstream and Belmont. Let's have shows at Hawthorne and Laurel Park and Evangeline. Great Lakes and Suffolk and Prairie Meadows. Hit an OTB. Some of them are nice and would welcome the exposure, as would the little tracks. Talk to the local punters for a couple minutes, but not too long. Hearing how Granny plays tri's based on the lottery number is cute for about half a minute, then it's tiresome. Talk to racing secretaries at the tracks to find out what's going on locally and regionally. Unless you're a media savvy entertainer as a host, you need great guests to make it work. People already mentioned bringing on the national cappers. I agree. Just my opinion.

Get behind the scenes to see what happens in the count rooms and how the simulcast money gets passed around. Talk to the guy punching tickets out at the walk-up window. Get some stories form them. Talk to the guy who's been selling programs for 30 years. That type of thing. Talk to accounting people and surveillance people and find out what they're up against from a forensic accounting and security standpoint. Just throwing out ideas as I think about what interests me about the whole operation.

How about a contest for a superfecta at TBD; clips of the horses' previous races and some connections interviewed.
Also, spewcial segments or shows featuring retirement homes showing good ex-racers.

Well for starters the content of the show should largely depend on what direction you wanna take. For instance do you wanna be a informational show that caters to the beginner handicapper? Such material would contain a in depth explanation of fundamental inner workings of the racetrack, the location of racetracks and a brief explanation of what type of horses/races they have there.

Or would the show focus more on the handicapping angle? Catering more to the average or experienced horseplayer. You would discuss angles that have worked for you regarding picking winners at the OTB or here in the racebooks. Offering advice and making picks with a brief explanation of why you like those picks.

Or you could go with a hardcore betting segment. Breaking down and focusing solely on the betting aspect and how to make money. In depth explanation of all aspects of winning money at handicapping i.e. (Straight bets, Exactas,Tris, Supers, Horse Parlays, Futures etc). In addition having a "Contest Corner" informing them on how to be successful in a contest format and also letting them know where/when the contests are being held (this is also a good way to maybe pick up a sponsor or two).

There is plenty of material to fill a 30 minute show. You could even break down the days and cover all of these aspects making each day specific to a particular topic. The beauty of having a show regarding horseracing is that there are so many different things to discuss because of the different aspects that surround the sport. As far as guests appearing on the show not sure if that would be successful. Every interview you see with jockey/trainers/owners is always very boring. They never offer any insight into how to pick winners and half the time you can't understand them because they don't speak english (jockeys) or they are just to old (owners).

When people see a show they don't wanna know what the damn horse ate for breakfast or if the jockey kicked his cocaine habit, they wanna know how to put money in their pockets. That is how you attract the new horseplayer. Give them a reason to watch. Give them something to look forward to, such as a tutorial on how to win or a explanation of how it all works. Keep it interesting and upbeat. Don't bring on some 90 year old millionaire talking about how this colt is this and that, and he looked so good when he did this and that.

Whatever direction you guys decide to go I will be sure to check it out. Can't wait to see what the content will be.

Great idea about the celebs, that may be one way to bring the younger generation aboard. Anyone know Brittany Spears? I heard that Steve has a wax figure of her...maybe he could put it in the background..LOL I know a certain teller named Mikey would be tuning in!!

How about retiring/recently retired jockey interviews? They can talk about the track, and what they are going to do next.

Please post any ideas for a possible cable show in this thread.

STeveLast years hero in the triple crown races is a good example of fighting for a cause, Alex's song will always make me shove a buck their way. Matty Stepanik may be a good cause to take up, retired race horse fund, or the Don McBeth fund, encourage your people to help. It will get the peoples attention.

If you're still looking for ideas for the show I have a few. I like the name ( Racers Edge ). I would like to see a show that educates the viewer i.e furlong times, breeding, the value of the jockey, things like that. Also getting the viewers involved with a beat the experts segment and something fun where a novice who only picks based on the name of the horse competes against an expert.

Also maybe a segment that spotlights a different Derby contender each week or maybe a specific track and its history. Maybe even have a contest that sends a winner to the Derby! Okay I'm rambling now but those are a few of my thoughts..
Thanks,
Tom
