If you get a chance watch R-1 Pimlico Apr. 26. Stick Poni(32-1) was a first time starter and ran an interesting race. She broke pretty well and was about 5 off the pace. Then she dropped back what looked like 15 lengths and then started rolling down the stretch and finished 3 lengths from the winner. Pretty good for a 4 1/2 fur. race.

Stick Poni sure did make a charge down the stretch. I don't know why the horse had such a rough trip in the middle of the race, but, like you said, a good break, then flat, then a locomotive.
Thursday's race should be interesting!
Thanks for the heads up!

what is so special of this pedigree?
Nothing really special about Volponi but then what is about any of them, it's like what have you done for me lately? He is a new sire that I've been following since I read the book "The Big Horse" by Joe McGinniss. P.G. Johnson, Volponi's trainer, was a big believer in the theories on breeding by Federico Tesio. Johnson made Breeders Cup history as the first breeder, owner (along with Ed Baier), and trainer of a Breeder's Cup race winner. Federico Tesio (1869-1954) is the most successful breeder of Thoroughbreds in the history of racing. The horses he bred at his Dormello Stud on the banks of Lake Maggiore in northern Italy continue to have a genetic impact on Thoroughbreds around the world. What is so remarkable about Tesio's success is that he was not a man of great wealth. He maintained a small band of inexpensive broodmares that the "experts" considered modestly bred. He rarely patronized fashionable sires and stood no stallions of his own. Yet the "Wizard of Dormello" turned out the likes of Nearco and Ribot. Nearco is the sire of champions Neartic and Nasrullah, thus the point stallion for the Northern Dancer and Bold Ruler lines. Every Kentucky Derby winner since 1967 to present has "Nearco" in his or her bloodlines on one side or the other or both except "Affirmed" and more recently 6 out of the last 10 winners also had "Ribot" on one side or the other or both which is not surprising because the blood of the horses Tesio bred is found in about 75% of todays Thoroughbreds. One of the techniques used by Federico was that of line breeding which, considering the total lack of computer equipment in those days, must have been a slow and painstaking task. Federico Tesio will undoubtedly be remembered as the greatest Thoroughbred breeder of the 20th century. Volponi was named for turf writer Paul Volponi. Volponi upset the 2002 four million dollar Breeder's Cup Classic as the 43-1 longest shot on the board, by 6 1/2 widening lenghts, the largest margin in Classic history. Johnson said of Volponi "I think he's a natural 1 1/4-mile horse and he runs just as well on the dirt as on the turf." Volponi carries the blood of Nearco and Ribot on both sides several times. I'm betting that Volponi wiil pass that on and become one of the most dominating sires sometime in the future and hopefully in the near future.
"A horse runs with his lungs
preservers with it's heart
and wins with it's character"
(Federico Tesio)

Tears finished dead last and the chart said she broke in at the start so I guess she was going sideways when the others were going straight, oh well, all them 2 yr olds are still pretty green. I think one of the best chances for “Volponi” to have his first winner will come tomorrow in the <?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = ST1 /><ST1:place>Hollywood</ST1:place> 4th 06-16-07 (2:50) - 5 1/2 Furlongs (All Weather Track) | Open | 2 Year Olds Maiden Special Weight | Purse: $46,000 – with # 9 – “Reel Prime”. Prime was closing fast on the outside last time in a Mdn 46K at 4 ½ f and got an 87 Bris for that and tomorrow is 5 ½ f. He was less then two lengths from the winner. I saw the race and he was really coming. I hope “Reel Prime” can break the ice and “Volponi” will get his little mention at the Bloodhorse.com for his first winner.

Volponi represented by first winner - Atricle at The Handicapper's Edge - Brisnet.com
Energy Center posted a nose victory on Thursday in the 3RD race at Woodbine, giving his sire, VOLPONI (Cryptoclearance), his first winning offspring. The David Cotey-trained juvenile captured the 4 1/2-furlong test in :53 1/5 over the Polytrack with Todd Kabel in the saddle.
Volponi was a consistent stakes performer on both dirt and turf during his four-year career, but earned his greatest victory with an easy 6 1/2-length score in the 2002 Breeders' Cup Classic (G1), defeating the likes of Medaglia d'Oro, Hawk Wing and E Dubai. The bay also recorded wins in the 2001 Pegasus H. (G2), 2002 Poker H. (G3) and 2000 Pilgrim S. (G3), and he placed in 10 graded stakes. He ran third in the 2002 Sword Dancer Invitational H. (G1), and returned the next year to finish second in the Suburban H. (G1), Whitney H. (G1), Brooklyn H. (G2) and Saratoga Breeders' Cup H. (G2) for trainer P.G. Johnson.
Volponi racked up earnings of $3,187,232 during his career, posting a 31-7-12-5 record in the process. He is out of the Sir Harry Lewis mare Prom Knight, making him a half-brother to multiple Grade 3-placed Fickle Friends (Demons Begone), an unraced juvenile filly named Fine Time Lucille (Mineshaft) and an unnamed yearling filly by Smarty Jones.
Volponi stands at K.R.A. Jeju Stud Farm in Korea for a private stud fee.

I hope "Poni Colada" will make a little noise in the Lone Star Derby (G3) this Saturday 05-10-08. Also on the same card in the 8th is "No Tears In Heaven" who will try to make short work of ten other Fillies and Mares at a mile on the turf for $13,000. The Volponi Stakes for $75,000 is to be run at Belmont on Sunday 05-11-08 Race 8. Unfortunately there are no "Volponi" offspring running in this race, mostly old farts. Half the field is six yrs old or older. I like "Parading" a 5 yr old Pulpit (A.P.Indy) horse owned by the Phipps Stable. "Parading" is coming off what appears to be a hard race against KipDevile and Einstein where he only beat three horses. That race might have been a setup for this race. "Parading" beat Pletcher's horse by a neck in the MarkersMile and today "Parading" receives a weight break of three lbs. from "Ruff And Ready". Both horses are the only horses to drop from a G1 Stakes to an un-graded Stakes. Also it is the second start back for both horses since February.
Anybody else have any thoughts on the Volponi Stakes?
On another note, "Roboponi" won the 3rd race today 05-09-08 at Arlington Park where his Daddy made all that noise in the Breeder's Cup. Robo went off the even money chalk.

Strike A Deal to win. He looks like the class of the field, but he hasn't raced since Sept. Wood Be Willing might upset for Allen Jerkens. He was best friend of Phil Johnson, trainer of Volponi.
