Hello,

I noticed that you are from the "Lone Star State". A great personal story follows:

At the Breeders Cup two years ago -the wife and I were asked to use an overflow table in the Club. A few minutes later some people sat down. An older guy-Michael from Europe and his son. Turns out his son is an actor--Jerry McConnell of Crossing Jordan Fame. He was joined by Josh Duhamel of "Las Vegas" fame. They were joined by some of their writers. My wife was in AWE. We had a great day and we all had fun.

After the races they invited the wife and I to the set of Vegas. We went and they set us up like stars ourselves for the day. A main part of their talk was that I wagered $2K on a horse to win. They just couldn't believe it. However, you guys will laugh when I tell you the horse I took that GREAT risk with, because you are in the know too. The horses name was "Ghostzapper". That horse made me look like a handicapping wizard to those who don't go to the races much.

We maintained contact for awhile after that day. Amazing memories from was my first ever visit to Lonestar.

--------------------

Tips? Plenty of them on this site from many who are much better than me. I hope to learn too, but I will pass on a few things myself from time to time. Stay tuned.

Great story Steve, that may be what I like the most about our hobby or profession for some..theres always a great story.....one I vaguely remember was about a horse race possibly in New York or somewhere in the northeast it was so foggy you couldn't see the horses...it was a twice around race and the winning horses only went around once on the replay!!!!!!!!!!!

Steve

At 600.00 per $2 ticket you must have a IRS form filled out to recive your winnings. If a ticket exploded to $5000.00 on a $2 ticket then the IRS takes $25% on the spot.

Steve, do you file as a professional gambler?

Filing as a recreational player I've lost my personal deductions. I'm contemplating going full time so that I can file as a professional.

Any advice?

Thanks,

Nicole

Thanks for the comments everyone.

Should have mentioned that Deltasports gave us all a huge scare in the paddock at the Breeders Cup as he suffered a Heart Attack!!

Leave it to Delta Sports to get all the attention at a Breeders Cup. LOL

We can laugh now, but you did give us quite the scare then.

I was wondering if at some point we could get you to post some slowed down version of the decisions you make of how you handicap a certain race.

Trying to capture this thought it reminds me that.....

As a critical care doc, I am confronted by many very smart well meaning family members of patients that ask me to explain why "they" or as a lay person why can't they make clinical decisions about the direction of medical care for their family member since...

......the "medical layperson" believe's they 1) Have a very high IQ 2) Have degrees showing they have been educated or trained how to think successfully for many years (e.g. a particular attorney comes to mind) 3) believe if they have a book or literature on the subject such as"

" ALL THERE IS TO KNOW ABOUT MECHANICAL VENTILATORS" by Dr Blood Gas

they should be able to pick what "winners" or physiology to change

( I have actually had family members turn dials on the ventilator to see what it does to the patient....)

When I tell Mr Attorney "It doesn"t work like that SIR....." there is no book that if read gives one experience. You have to earn experience!!! I have learned how to solve a problem with mechanical ventilation with the mistakes as well as the knowledge I have gained from years past and literally thousands of patients.

I make a 100 small decisions leading up to a large decision that is either successful or failure but I could never tell you what the small decisions are......they happen tooo fast or are instinctual.

Steve, could we slow you down for one race and have you share the little decisions and how much weight you give each leading to the big decision.

Possible items to influence a horse selection....ranked in some random order to be arranged in order of importance someday by handicappers better than me.

1) Jockey record

a) at todays distance
a1) Jockey at this level race (eg Jock who wins 50% off claim etc)
a2) record in extremes of weather
b) for this horse
c) with this trainer
c1) at this meet and distance
d) how many mounts for the jock now and today
e) on this surface or weather
f) time since last race or between mounts
g) Jockey's performance last race on today's card especially if won tight race expending large amount of energy
h) workouts with horse
i) superior jockeys in race or level of jockey competition

2) Trainer info

a) at todays distance and history of success (sprint vs route turf vs dirt)
b) for this horse
c) with this stable
d) how many horses are they involved with this meet (is this known easily?)
e) on this surface or weather
f) record with layoff

3) Horse info

a) finishes at todays distance and recent previous distance
a1) Jockey who rode previously at this level race or other level purse (eg Jock who wins 50% off claim)
a2) Previous starts and charts
a3) Performance from recent PP
b) for this jockey
c) with this trainer
d) how many mounts now and today has this jock had with horse
e) record on this surface
e1) weather and condition of track from it
f) calendar time since last race
g) statistics with names (Beyers Tomlinson Rating)
h) scratches (early and late)
i) weight for race (heavy or light)
j) Lasix 1ST or how many.....
k) Blinders or not; New or not
h) workouts published and when
m) todays odds value or lack there of
n) day card and night card record

4) Other horses in race info
a) Is there early speed
a1) who closes is it close to horses of interest
b) Who closes in the race
b1) how close to other horses
c) Are there identifiable factors that favor a given horse to finish 2 ND 3 RD or 4 TH

Steve.......am I tweaking the dials on the mechanical ventilator? or can we discuss how important some of the items listed are in excluding or picking a horse!!!!!

I don't claim to be a super handicapper by any stretch ... but.... there are some similarities between most any discipline that involves decision making.

I work at it backwards from the methods used by others. I do not look for winners. I look for losers.

Throw out all the losers .... and the last one remaining is the bet. In today's racing, for example ... there are about 30 tracks running ... say 300 races.

I have selected only ten of those 300 as POSSIBLE bets ...and will likely have not more than 4 bets out of them.

Here's my list:

CT is track ... first number is race, 2nd is horse, 3rd is distance, 4th is class, 5th is days since last race ...

CT 2 2 4.5 STK 15 $2.60 $2.20 $2.20 SEEMS SOLID

ASD 2 1 6 1 42 $4.10 $2.80 $2.60 dslr troubling

AP 3 6 6.5 C10 46 $3.20 $2.20 $2.10 NOT LIKELY no bets @ 3/5 on this one

AP 8 3 6 STK 260 $5.20 $3.20 $2.20 no bets

CT 6 3 4.5 STK 31 maybe NO BETS 2/5 ... zippo .....

CT 9 7 9 STK 29 very iffy scratched

HST 5 1 6.5 1 76 xx $2.50 $2.30 probable this is precisely why I do not bet to win on most horses that haven't run in 20 days or less. Maidens, especially, just cannot get there ... this one, for example, was 2/5 ... dropping in class... but... no races in 76 days. They normally do at least show....

TDN 10 3 6 1 7 $4.20 $2.60 $2.10 One firstie ranked high

SR 4 8 5.5 C4 51 xx xx $2.60 likely DSLR DQ?

SR 7 1 8 C12 21 $3.00 $3.20 $2.60 MAYBE (This was an entry ... the other half actually won it, with my selection coming in second. That is why place and show are higher, proportionally, than normal).

So... today, I made 7 bets .. hit all 7, luckily. Based on $2 bets, I bet $14, had $21 return, for a nice 50% ROI on the day.

Some of the ones I couldn't toss out, still won, even though I didn't bet them. I'm just too cheap, I guess, to bet all my picks. I just want to be ASSURED they will at least run where I bet them!

The bolding on figures is where I bet. CT show bets pay a minimum of 10% ...

Thanks for the welcome Steve. I joined while I was in Texas trying to sell my home .I have currently moved to Las Cruces,New Mexico, half way between Ruidosa Downs and Sunland Park where I will be doing most of my Horse play.A far cry from Sam Houston Race Park. I am a punter when it comes to horse betting but I aspire to becoming a professional.I am 65 years young and retired from the USPS. Usually my bankroll is little more than the price of admission to get in so I am adverse to too many losing bets before my ship comes in.This is a new move for me because I was born and raised in Texas. In Houston to be exact

Steve,
That is truly amazing. I have a friend who terrible lost his mom when we were in the 8th grade. He went on to finish high school. He turned 18 and the 2000's tech boom started. He made about 1.8 mil in about 16months. He has put 800k in 12 months bonds and rolls it over ever year. He has a condo in Vegas and he wants me and my wife to go there and handicap with him. In my current state of life I could not do it, but seeing your results make me consider it? I AM GLAD YOUR HARDWORK PAYS OFF!!!
