I have found that 35 days is a good cut-off time for eliminating runners of mid to low priced claming races.
For example, If a horse is entered for a claiming price of $10,000 and has not raced in 35 days can be eliminated as a contender.
Exceptions to this angle or rule would be:
The horse has had 2 bullet works since it last raced and is dropping in class, but not more than 20%
The horse has shown in the past that it runs well after a lay-off.
