View Full Version : Best Triple Crown Trainer?
If you had a TC nominee and could pick any trainer you wanted to handle the horse up to the triple Crown series, who would it be?
Who would you pick to handle a top turf female horse?
I would pick William Mott for the male TC'er, and Bob Baffert for the female turfer.

wouldn't you reverse them.. i mean mott is certainly more prominent with turf horses and baffert with dirt.. would use DICK DUTROW for the male 3 yo... and the female turfer why not Mullins..he has huge turf numbers..
"Smarty Jones' loss denied his connections the $5 million Visa Triple Crown bonus, and the Mott-trained Cigar remains the richest thoroughbred in history."
He knows the TC ropes, how to go after money, and how to campaign a horse. And he may go under the radar some.
Baffert can set up a top schedule and would not ruin a turf horse as a 2 year old. He is too much of a make-or break trainer for me.
But I wanted a variety of suggestions, partly to get to know what others do about top traiuners, and partly to get Steve thinking about havng a horse for the TC trail!

Uh, Ken do you have Mott and Baffert mixed up?
Mott is the conserative trainer who excells with Turf runners and rarely pushes his young horses hard.
Baffert is the White haired fella who focuses most of his energy on the Triple Crown races.

Lets go back 30 tears BEFORE we had all the drugs horses are getting,I would pick the old frenchman Lucien Lauren, Trainer of the great Secretariat and also trainer of Riva Ridge. What this man done with his horses back then was just wonderful.

if your going back in time its tough to pass up woody stephens accomplishments in the 3 year old classics, and bobby frankel has a sparkling record with females on the turf.

I Wouldn't Give Baffert A Frog To Train
I Have Been In His Barn And Watched His Operation And And And
Good question Ken!!!!...... definitely Mott on the turf.....and for the Triple Crown trainer Frankel and only if he could get Steve Cauthen to ride!!!!!!!!!

The only one I can recall is Favorite Trick. FTrick went undefeated at 2 for Pat Byrne then transferred to Mott's barn for 3 year old season. The son of Phone Trick was really a sprinter and never had a chance to win at classic distances. He got beat in the Arkansas Derby by Walden's Victory Gallop and an underrated Hanuman Highway.
*I'd take Pletcher if I had the cash for my Triple Crown monster and I'd give my turf female to Akiko Gothard.
Would you want you big shot horses to run the toughest 2 and 3 year old races, routes only, which TC and KY Oaks preps would you send them to? Would you try to avoid the winter weather completely and go a Southern route? Funny Cide stuck to the NY statebreds; seems like some horses stick to certain regions of the country.
Would you go to the Magna speedy tracks or go CRC/Tp/ other slower tracks?
How much strategy is actually involved to qualify a KY Derby horse by earnings? Giacomo qualified with 1 maiden race and many ITM finishes.
I would really like to hear from those who have been around racing l;onger than me (10 years). Thanks!

Dont get me wrong, I like Gothard, but what in the world would make you choose Gothard to train a turf filly?? I know Gothard's got that turf horse out of Iron Courage, but i think that horse even runs better on the dirt. Cant wait to hear your response.. Stan Hough is a nice turf trainer. Mr. Motion, Dickinson, or if you prefer on the ky circuit how about Helen Pitts..

Nick Zito. I like reading the charts on his horses. Very interesting to see how he spots his runners for the bigger prize towards Belmont.
