Yesterdays first race at Tampa is a perfect example of races which come up where the astute handicapper must decide about a claimer being dropped...The #1 Goldirunner was dropping from 12k claimer to 5k he ran competively at 8.5k the horse has 1 win and 7 seconds in 11 starts at Tampa. Why is the horse running for 5k? Is he hurt, is the trainer trying for an easier spot, someones trying to get rid of him??? Ok lets look at the purse 6.5k,if he wins they get about 3.5k The horse was a competitive 2nd for 8.5k,,if the horse gets claimed for 5k they get 8.5k back with a win......The horse went off the favorite with the $2 exacta paying $22.00 not bad for chalk and 2nd choice....... This happens a great deal at Delaware the purse structure creates drop downs where one can make money when a horse is dropping after a claim.. You have to do the math ,sometimes they steal the race and make a couple grand and even if the horse gets claimed back they still make out...Roughly 60% of the purse goes to the winner so add that on to the caliming tag and see if someones taking a loss or not..Many a player has told me there's something wrong but each horses has a value and we must decide if the horse is being given away
or not,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,good luck at Delaware
