Need your input for this one.
Trainer Greg Griffith is a friend of many of us at Tampa Bay and a member of Track Winners.
Today one of his horses “DirtyMoPossee” who has the ability to beat the field (including the Track Record setter #10 horse) again got in trouble. Castillo was inside/ checked-went to the outside and was too late finishing 4th. Here is the chart writers take:
MARLEY'S REVENGE chased inside, angled to the middle of the course out of the turn then ran down the leader in the final strides. CHAOTIC ACHIEVER sprinted clear, set a fast pace then just hung late while best of the rest. TIO LUPE was well placed but was outkicked late. DIRTYMOPOSSE closed a gap too late.
I am not the sharpest trip capper, but I think a rider change is the ticket to break this pattern. Perhaps I have a jaded view, but to be sure I am asking for your input if you can watch the replay, or if you have seen the race already. The question becomes-Do you agree that a rider change will put this talented horse in the winners circle OR do you feel it is something else that the jockey has no control over? Your thought are appreciated, and I am sure Greg will also.

Steve,
Dirty Mo is an interesting case. Because he is a closer at 5F on the Turf, he is prone to traffic problems. Last year Castanon was able to get him up.
I think Oliver Castillo is a very capable rider - a rider change may help - but it may not. Who would he be replaced by? That's the problem. Lezcano is heads above this colony, Castanon has been butchering as many favorites that he wins on. Houghton - not on the turf. I don't know.
Tough spot. But, if I had a horse and couldn't get Lezcano - I'd take Castillo.

Satisfyingwager,
Not sure if Greg would change, but I am certain if he did that he would ask Castanon. I agree 100% with your jockey comments and like you I feel that Terry H. just doesn't have as good a clock as others on the Turf. Thanks for your input and hopefully Greg will notice this thread. Like I stated, I could be very critical and jaded as I watched Castillo get in trouble with several mounts for me. Strange thing is that he always beats me when I don't use him.

I think O Castillo is a very capable rider, however the time is now to make the change Castanon has won with him before, and maybe the two reuniting may be the ticket to win...

Hi, We really are listening to all your comments. We respect Olivers riding ability but we just can't get the job done together. Right now the horse is the best he has ever been!We just want to do right by DMP.

We just put Tammy on a 5 yr old maiden who nearly won 100 G's in earnings Well she got the job done!!! That choice could be interesting. Thanks for the input.

Greg, you put Tammi on Cartage the other day and the horse responded with a very nice winon the turf at 9-1! Cosme couldn't get the job done and I was hoping you would change jockeys I, too, think Tammi would be very capable...

Use this guy,use that guy.
Its a no brainer.
You reach out for Jose Lezcano, and hope that Captain Kirk does not have a
horse in the race.
Lezcano is so much better than anybody in that Jocks Room.
Steve is so right! Castanon is butchering one horse after another.
Haughton,as previously stated by this narrator,is a 10% winning joke.
There is no clock in this mans head. The young beauty has his head elsewhere
Castillo is a journeyman, who you dont know what you are going to get from one race to the next.Sometimes brilliant, sometimes looks like a 10 pound bug.
Tammi has really impressed me,shes got guts!
All I can tell you based on workouts and previous races, ths horse needs to be going for it the whole race. The worst race showing was when "rated". In this race, based on the results charts, it looks like 2 horses around yours took off and yours was dogging the one in 7th place- followed it 1/2 length back for awhile. Maybe Castillo let the other 2 get away. Your horse should have tried to go after them and not allowed to "rate" behind a lagger.
At least in this race and probably others, the horse nereded to to be pushed early.

Very interesting Thread and revealing.
Prior to this I have not heard any of the comments I am hearing now concerning Tammi. I am going to watch her more closely now thanks to this thread.

The rider isn't the problem, its just that you have to get lucky in 5 furlong turf races unless you are dominant speed. If you run the same race 100 times DMP probably wins 25% of the time regardless of the rider.

thanks owl... it has every thing to do with other factors: class, trip, and at 5 furlongs, a race setup or scenario is so vital... oliver is fine.. horses are suited for a certain distance just as any other animal..some animals are fastest at 50 yards, some at 5 miles. it may be the 5 furlong distance just doesnt suit DMP, or the 5 furlong course at TBD is a bit too quick for him to getthere.. i think we still must consider the jockey being a little lower on the importance scale of a race..

I think the distance is fine maybe now 5 1/2 would be more to his liking now. But we only have 5 here. You have to believe me now, this horse has a mind of his own and he knows where and when to go. The jock needs to follow him! He took Castanon for a few wild rides last year and they got the job done. So luck , perfect trip, jock, and the horse all in under a minute thats alot to hope for.

im not sure where you guys race.. im thinking imight have seen gregg in the North east, canada.. Some places for 5.5 or 6 f turf are Ellis Park in the summer 5.5, Keeneland 5.5, Bel 6f, Colonial Downs has a 5.5, Santa Anita 6.5f, Indiana Downs has a 5.5, Kentucky Downs for their short meet has 6 and 7f, La Downs 7.5f, Hol 5.5, Meadowlands = new surface might offer that ideal distance... just off the top of my head... a few steps further might work!!! who knows, im a big believer that a half furlong, especially in races up to 1 1/16 miles, big difference in each little distance..
good luck donna..

I would run the horse long 1 1/16 where he would get a uncontested pace with easy fractions on the front end!
