Last Sunday's La Canada Stakes, SA
huge favorite, *****cat Doll, connections decide that Seafree will get an easy lead if someone doesn't run with her. Pace makes the race, brainless move. Seafree won anyway, and the Doll ran fourth. *****cat Doll's previous race was a perfect example of a horse held up for a run, as she blew by her field and won as the next coming of the female Secretariat or something!.......who else saw the race and thought it stunk pretty good?
Tom
I saw the replay; I also saw the 4f dirt workout time and knew speed would go like crazy. there are many trainers and jockeys who do not know how to read the track dfor speed. For that distance, the track was about 3 seconds faster than the previous week. I had Seafree.

Ken as you say it favored speed. I had that figured out too. However, when do you take it upon yourself to sacrifice your horses' chance to win by being the 'pace prompter'? When you are a one run horse and late running at that?
I guess that's my take.
Tom
ps...this is the perfect spot to run a rabbit instead
The connections of a rabbit have already decided their rabbit has no win chance- or it would not be a rabbit (like Spanish Chesnut). Some if not all of those should be sprinting. As it turned out, 3 connections decided to scratch their horses after paying a fee to run. They did not like their horse's chances enough!
*****cat went off at .60- win would have paid $3.20. I would never bet those low odds. The lowest odds I ever bet is 4/5.
Seafree had odds of 4+-1 4th choice.
The higher the purse level, the smaller the difference between the quality of the horse. less has to go wrong for a horse to lose.
I would look for a horse's fractional times to see if it fades at the distance.

So, they were hesitant to waste a race, I'd guess the presence of *****cat Doll and not the presence of the winner was the deciding factor!
In other words, what I'm trying to say is, if you let that one go out there on her own, your inherent ability will either get you there or it won't, but at least your filly has run her race.
Tom
ps think 'Concern' and horses like that oh heck, maybe the 'Doll' is just a flash in the pan
If *****cat closed big last race, she was asked to run in a completely opposite style Sunday. It was also an extremely fast track that day, as the workouts reveal. Baffert is online stating that he waits to workout his horses in the morning until he knows how tyhe track is running; I'm sure Baffert figured out prior to the race that speed would go and that *****cat could not close like before. Change of strategy that morning!
The closer horses are asked to train and run compared to how they are used to and successful at running the beter- that is what loses the Belmont for many horses.
Funny Cide had no chance in the Belmont because to rate him they had to strangle him and deplete his energy.

What does (Off Behind In Warm Ups) mean? I have never heard that phrase before.
