has shown dramatic improvement since middle to late last year. he seems to be one of the only one's getting better.. his improvement and speed has increased to a strange level.. still the class test is to come.. but, i think he may be legit.. you just dont see them get this much better too often.. and i love the more modestly bred colts.. Afleet Alex (northern afleet), Smarty (Elusive Quality), Real Quiet (Quiet American), Funny Cide (Distorted Humor), Lawyer Ron (Langfuhr)????

"Horse Player" magazine rated last year Derby entries as follows:
Afleet Alex 74.3 Bandini 80.4 Buzz Bay 64.9 High Fly 79.0 Gone Wild 62.6
High Limit 66.0 Andromeda Hero 72.8 Belamy Road 77.3.........

Giacomo 65.1

What in God's earth do these figures mean?

Giacomo, rated close to the bottom?

I made the mistake of blurting out his name at work, and failed to back it with a deuce...something I won't do this year.

Anybody like an unknown?

That's my pick. I'm in the "Dark Star" camp when it comes to the Derby.

Anyone remember what the exacta paid last year? (Balloons).

Good luck!

Mop38 I really haven't gotten to see the top horses but I beleive there is an unknown or field horse lurking to win the Derby.. When Charismatic did it he was a claiming horse.......Some of the ones I've seen I really haven't been to impressed with...Perhaps Achilles of Troy or a new face at Tampa..This year Tampa Downs has had a very fast track....maybe the Derby horse will pass through Tampa Bay Downs??The field bet in the futures may be the way to go...???

Delta Sports,

We had limited room at the time we put up this poll. Therefore we only used the top horses at the time. So, who wins the Derby?

Whatever horse will be showing the most improvement in preps has a great shot at winning!

For those of us who remember the thundering hooves of Secretariat and the inspiration he produced in an era when Watergate was washing away our faith in government, I have a story to tell.

Back in the day when a buck was still something of value, two bucks was something few of us could flip around freely like we do today.

Thanks to crecit cards pervading everything we do, these are different times.

Secreatariat captured our hearts when we needed something to believe in, and he made me get interested in a sport that constantly changes and where longshots still make the game exciting.

So, when it came to watching what would follow in the wake of Secretariat's Triple Crown, I devised a tally sheet, and came up with one horse called Hudson County.

I told everyone I knew that I thought he had a shot.

On the day of the Derby, I went to an OTB in N.Y. and decided that Cannonade could beat him. However, I didn't want to spend an additional $2.00 on that exacta. Instead, I stood with my original choice.

Later that day I was driving for car service to help support my young family, and all I kept seeing on OTB windows was that exacta payout...over $3,000.00.

And I still have that OTB sheet where I marked down Cannonade 1, Hudson County 2

I vow I will never again not back a hunch with another $2.00 bet...just in case.

Good Luck everybody, and thanks for reading!

Where is Achilles of Troy in this pole? In his last race he posted a 103 Beyers!!!!

Anybody like an unknown?

Itsallboutthechase

Why?

Seems like there's going to be plenty of speed in the race with Keyed Entry, First Samarai and the California horses.

So I'm looking for closers at a nice, large price.

I also tend to think the highest 3 year old competition has been at Gulfstream. However, the track during the big preps this year at Gulfstream have been hard to decifer. I think the SA, AQU and OP have all been a little light in the competitive-ness of the preps. The top horses have yet to be looked and the eye and tested.

I think Itsallboutthechase gets some payback come derby day.

i've noticed that bliuegrasscat leads the poll..does anyone here still feel this way now after he was beating yesterday

That's a good question, I don't really think he can. I've havent seen him turn on the other gear that a derby winner needs..

Pletcher wasa trying to teach both of his superstars how to rate. Keyed Entry proved himself a viable derby contender by being able to and Bluegrass Cat was unable to rate against light heavyweights. This means Bluegrass Cat needs the lead and should be a derby longshot around 20-1.

Lawyer Ron reminds me of Afleet Alex. He has the extra gear to get the job done. He beat a rank Private Vow who never looked comfortable in the race.

Sure, he still belongs.. Here's my idea; his lackluster performance tells me one thing: he is a front runner and not the type who likes to pass. POSSIBLE SOLUTION: PUT THE BLINKS ON and turn him loose.. Let's see if he can do it on top. So, not a throwout yet.... other things to try... and the odds may finally be fair next time out!! I can't rip you twice about the same horse...bc(.....i don't see Ghostzapper yet, but.....HA just playin' man... I tried not to rip you twice...but my urges are beyond my control!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
