over the years, i have , with some fair success , kept the following as policy : i will not consider a horse to win who is over the age of 7 years......e.g. if the horse is 8 years or older , NOT CONSIDERED.......

Jerfi,
Fort Erie my favorite track in Canada , has many old timers still chugging along at 8 9 10 11 and older... Now and then they do pop....some at decent prices , but for the most part, i have best results looking elsewhere for the win wager .
Grazie and Buona Fortuna ( thanks and good luck )

Hi, Joe,
Yes ... I'm aware, too, that the winner beyond 7 is not as common as earlier. But, there, again, it's one of the handicapping angles I just don't use. I don't look at the age of the horse, EXCEPT for 2 yr olds, which I don't like to bet.
Anything else, though, I just go for ability, and let the age thing alone. I could never figure out what to do with good stats, and old horses!
Many horses that stay around to 7 or longer may finish 1 through 4 consistently if trained properly "meal ticket".

And you surely don't eliminate many horses with that cut.

Well, I am half and half.On the one hand, I think that horses over 5 yo, should be retired. On the other hand, older horses have more experience than the younger horses. The older horses wont startle at every little thing, movement, and noise that happens to him/her on the track.

IMHO I would not have them start under 3, require exams as per my list, and not allow any TBred to run within 3 weeks of its last race.
If racing got their act together to better control leg problems then races could be carded for "5+ up". Let the 3's and 4's run against their own age group.
