I thought I would share some of the highlights & lowlights with you folks of my trip to the ky. derby this year.
My cohorts were Larry Higgins, Bill Bartlett (equine dentist), & Larry's buddy Judge Tom Depriest from St. Louis.
We left on Thurs. morning from TIA & landed in Cincinnati so we could first visit Larry's favorite track "River Downs" We then headed to Louisville were we stayed at the Executive Inn.
Friday was Ky. Oaks day & we didn't do very well, except Larry, he had the trifecta in the oaks($12,000). Myself I had a $10 oaks-derby double ticket that could be worth $8500 if Lawyer Ron won the derby!!!!Man, I was on cloud 9 for 24 hours. We know the outcome of that bet!
After the races Ken Boehm (Churchill Downs Chaplin & formerly of Tampa Bay Downs) took us on a tour of the backside & we got to see all the Derby runners.Ken had an assistant trainer bring Lawyer Ron to the front of his stall where I took some pictures of him. That was probably why he didn't run well. Blinded by the light.
Sunday morning at breakfast, I aske dLarry if he recognized the guy next to us at the table. He said no. It was none other than OJ Simpson. They wanted to see if he would sign my knife. hehehehe We didn't go there!!!!
If you love horse racing, you HAVE to make at least one trip to the Ky. Derby in this lifetime. A greater experience you will never have.
Just thought I would share the trip with ya'll

I went to the derby in 1990 for my 50th Brithday and had a great time (didn't win any money)

O.J. Simpson was interviewed at the Derby.

He said he liked Lawyer Ron, but would mortgage his house to bet on a horse named Lawyer Johnny. ( I don't believe he has a house to mortgage ).

I liked Point Given. A Co-worker who also trained horses like Lawyer Ron.

Coming from an outside post, and having many races under his belt, lawyer Ron was a good bet to avoid. (Naturally this is Monday morning quarterbacking).

What was overlooked is that the Derby winner used a technique not tried since needles, some fifty years ago. He was fresh, and he looks capable to make the big sweep and give us that elusive Triple Crown.

Good luck to him and all his connections. They deserve it. tro(
