Hey, I know I'm gonna take some flack for this from some of the bandwagoners, but I want to make a case against Brother Derek winning the Derby. I think, after today, there is no doubt he will be an Overwhelming favorite. Possibly lower than 2/1 or 9/5. His wins have all been fast, easy, and better with distance.

Personally, I really like him, b/c he is by Benchmark (one of my favorite studs) and good to see Hendricks get a nice one after his setback. BELIEVE THIS: NBC AND ALL OTHER STATIONS WILL GLUE TO THE HENDRICKS STORY AND MAKE THIS HORSE THE FOR SURE HYPE HORSE AND SENTIMENTAL FAVORITE. .............but I wanna point just a couple of things that may be working against him:

1. THE DERBY WILL PROBABLY BE LOADED WITH SPEED. KEYED ENTRY, SWEETNORTHERNSAINT, LIKE NOW, FIRST SAMURAI, SHARP HUMOR, BARBARO. you can add SINISTER MINISTER to this mix as well I believe 22, 45 and change!!
Brother Derek has had perfect races to showcase his speed while he was comfortable. The race he beat Stevie Wonderboy was a 4 horse field where he was the controlling pace. The prep to the SA Derby he beat an overhyped Frankel Maria's Mon just out of MSW company and was again able to get comfy. Same with today; caught a bunch of closers and strung them out to win impressively. ALL IM SAYING is WHAT HAPPENS WHEN HE HAS TO RUN FOR AROUND 7 FURLONGS HARD IN THE RACE RATHER THAN THE 3 OR 4 HE HAS BEEN RUNNING NOW? WILL HE BE THE SAME HORSE? even if he rates, its in his nature to be up close, and he could get sizzled.

2. THE DERBY IS IN KY.
Brother Derek has won all of his races in California. Even the most staunch supporter of Derek would have to agree that the Cali tracks favor speed more than any. And he is speed. Churchill is more unbiased and there is a long stretch. Some horses are clearly better out west and others are better in the East. EXAMPLE: SIGHTSEEK, SAINT LIAM
read the article in DRF about what Baffert said about Bob and John and the wider Aqu track...

3. THE PREVIOUS MENTIONED STORIES THAT WILL COME OUT ON HENDRICKS..PUBLIC SENIMENTALITY = PUBLIC BETS ON HIM.

4. IT'S THE DERBY FOR CHRIST'S SAKE!! CHALKS NEVER WIN!! (Sorry Smarty!@#$%^&*!!!!, my bad)do;

I think these are enough to leave doubt in betting Brother Derek at 7/5, 8/5...etc in the Derby.
ANYBODY GOT ANY OTHER ANGLES FOR OR AGAINST?? THANKS

I agree, Brother Derek does not win the Derby, favorites rarely do. Once again it will be bombs away!!

Lets fast forward....

Great sentimental story, of loss and resurrection.

Okay, but what about a Triple Crown?

Gees. Hasn't been one for..what? 29 years? 28?

Somebody, somewhere is keeping quiet about a maturing animal being pointed to the Belmont.

So Brother Derek takes one or possibly two, just like my animal friend did on this Post. But all three...where's Secretariat or Seattle Slew when you need them?

Brother Derek retires soon as a stallion, and we'll never really know his true potential.

All we keep getting from these young stallions is short-lived success stories.

I guess it all meshes in with the times. Nothing lasts.

I think he may just get the Derby or Preakness.

Strong Contender looms.

Good Luck!

Barbaro looked like he would be liking the added distance in the
derby. Not so sure about Bob and John, little skeptical on
Brother Derek also think he is more suited for a track like
Aqueduct track than CD.

Exciting Story

You forgot to mention that Brother Derek had a class advantage on all of his competitors in his four consecutive G1-G2 wins. The one exception was Stevie Wonderboy in the San Rafael. Stevie had equal class, but was coming off a short layoff, so Brother had the advantage of recency.

Brother Derek will not have a class advantage in the Derby, and the competitors he beat in Califoria gained seasoning, so Brother's advantage over them is diminished.

Has a Cal-bred ever been the favorite in the Derby? Yes. What then happened to General Challenge (entry), Indian Charlie, etc.? Their Santa Anita speed didn't hold.

Has a Cal-bred ever won the Derby? Yes. Decidedly in 1962 and Swaps in 1955. But not as favorites.

Even so, 1:48 flat is pretty fast. It was a good prep. A. P. Warrior got used keeping the pace honest, and it set up for Point Determined to make a closing run.

..look, this is a great animal. My article wasnt about keeping him out of the race, just out of the winners' circle. His times are brilliant. The SA Derby was set up on a platter for him to dominate though, as were the other preps. He was really headstrong to compete on the lead though, and that might cost him late in Louisville.do;

Somebody owns the last quarter of a mile at Louisville.

That "somebody" is anybody's guess now.

With Bob Baffert's horses doing wonders all over, surprised if any have something left when the real running begins.

Watch them unknowns. Some might be the real gold among the "fool's gold".

Good Luck!

Lawyer Ron is who I am putting all my money on in the Derby. 7-7 on dirt track, and the last 2 winners of the Arkansas Derby won 2 legs of the triple crown. ( Smarty Jones and Afleet Alex) He is the one to beat in my mind. I hope he is not the fav to win and gets fairly good odds.

...in the Derby. Keeneland is like a conveyor belt for clear speed. And I'm guessing with Sinister Minister's likely high Beyer rating that he will be played in the Derby around 8 or 10/1.. He is an easy leave out to me. Speed and fade.hr,
