There is none better than Tom Durkin. and a close second is little known Freehold announcer Larry Lederman.

i agree with slider...tom durkin is the man. i remember just before a race in new york when the starting gate was broken, and they had to bring in another one. as the new gate arrived, he announced...ladies and gentlemen, the starting gate is at the horses.

I believe "down the strech they come" was coined by Dave Johnson at the Meadowlands then later on tv broadcasts.

to me is appropriate for that track. Durkin and Johnson are all schtick. I love Denmen, Stouffer, Krytbosch, Rhona and Dooley. Oaklawn needs a new announcer.

Top Three

1. Tom Durkin - the standardbearer
2. Frank Salive - harness racing's best
3. Dan Loiselle - the best thoroughbred caller in Canada

The funniest racecaller was at Garden State.

it's either JOHN SCULLY who calls at FP or DAVE JOHNSON.

...is not too good... it's time for oaklawn to hook him up with a severance package... also agree about durkin... Overrated!! He gets the top bills, but he's not my cup of tea. I like the recent BM and GG announcer before Rhona as well, can't remember his name... he says "AND THERE THEY GO!!!"

Tony Calo was the best in NorCal . . . who's now calling races in New Mexico.

Michael Wrona is our caller now and I really enjoy his calls, very clear and concise. I also like Vic Stauffer in SoCal. Do not like Trevor Denman . . . . his stretch calls suck . . . . . . .

Worst race caller in the history of racing is Mike Battaglia . . . .he puts you to sleep.

Dan Loiselle is very good. I grew up on the woodbine bacstretch listing to Daryl Wells Sr. He was the greatest, But then again, He was all I knew. ANyone else that I did hear just didnt sound the same. I can still hear him calling Briartic, Cool Moon and Fabe Count battling for the lead. His Canadian International Championship of Secretariats last race was priceless "Ladies and genteman..He's all yours to cheish...Secretariat in front by a good margin"..Just something Ill always remember

Rodney ,,, the funniest racecaller you are reffering to at Garden State is Larry Lederman who is now the voice of Freehold Raceway.

harness guy says "and there they are." I think Calo is funny though. Battaglia "and down the stre-eh-etch" should quit. I've heard the old UK announcer Cawood Ledford calls of the Derby and they are amazing.

Marshall Cassidy- "Swale leads to the wire"... NYRA tracks.
Tom Durkin is so passionate about calling the races and Luke Kruytbosch has a very unique style.
Trevor Denman was calling a grass race about 15 or so years ago from Santa Anita, and the front runner had been there from the start and would not relinquish the lead, so Denmans' call was that the horse was hanging around like a mother-in-law!! That was a killer!

Gotta give a thumbs-up to Vic Stouffer and Michael Wrona also.

Can't stand the guy from Oaklawn... "and they're awfffff!!

My vote goes to the guy at Delaware Park, but I don't know his name offhand.

His voice is pleasant, clear and accurate.

Dave Johnson also was one of the best.

In baseball, nobody (in my opinion) comes close to Mel Allen.

If only I could bring back those lazy days of the 1950's and early 1960's, where everywhere you went, a radio was on and Mel Allen was announcing the New York Yankees, and all was good in America.

And today, whenever a '57 Chevy or a '59 Caddy goes by, I always turn my head and ponder what was lost.

Hey..Good Luck to you all!

DAVE JOHNSON CALLED THE West Virginia Derby... I forgot to update this.. It was the only time I've ever had to hold in my vomit from a racecall.. If you are studying to become an announcer, get a replay of this race and do the exact opposite of what he does.. He needs to hang up his spikes, he's all washed up!!bf.

The very best announcer would be, the announcer that never mentions
the name of the jockey riding the horse during the race. The name of
the horse ONLY! PLEASE!

When they are in the winner's circle, mention the jockey, that's it!

I remember when Keeneland didn't have a PA system, so there wasn't
any calls period. I would prefer no calls, if these so called great announcer's keep mentioning the jockey's name on the horse during the
race. Emphasize the name of the horse! That's it! Anything else is a
waste of time!

why? when victor espinoza was going for his 7th straight win at del mar trevor denman shouldn't have mentioned it during the call??? huh?? why?? jockey's are apart of the sport, as are horses.. If Todd Pletcher was going for 20 wins in a row on a horse and he took the stretch lead, I see no fault in the announcer even mentioning that when the horse crosses the wire. Why restrict the fun? i'd like to hear a rebuttal on this

I have no problem with a jock being mentioned, in the call, if something unusual is going on ... such as " Bug boy Jose Jimeniz is riding his first winner!"

or "That's Jose's 3rd win today." I'll guarantee you that I will see if he has more mounts for that day.

I agree with your statement, except I would replace "Above" with "Below"... I can't knock him too hard, but its like Joe Frazier and Muhammed Ali... Frazier was really good, but Ali was great...

Durkin is Frazier 2 me. Michael Wrona, John Dooley, Vic Stouffer i think are better

I kive near Santa Anita Park, so I'm biased toward Trevor Denman, but I have to admit that the guy's an idiot when he opens his mouth other than to call race.
He is to racing as Vin Scully is to baseball, bob miller is to hockey, and Chick Hearns was to basketball.
It's just a shame he has to open his mouth otherwise.:D

The Best Track Announcer I Can Recall Was Phil Georgeof,he Called Harness For Years In Chicago,as Well As Thoroughbreds At Arlington Park.he Was Always Known For His Call Of,"here They Come Spinning Outof The Turn",or If A Sloppy Track,"here They Come Splashing Out Of The Turn",he Was Very Funny & When The Golden Goose ,something Like Dutchceswayse, bought The Arlington Track He Was All Business & Fired Georgeof, within 3 Days He Received Over 10,000 Letters & Postcards From Fans & Had To Hire Him Back!
