First time starters rarely win route races. However, when a first time starter in a route shows a morning line of 5/1 or less and is bet down before the race, it can be a really good place and show bet. For example, Portrait of a Lady was a 1st time starter in a MSW over 1-1/8m on turf at Tampa Bay on 3/11/2006. The morning line was 9/2 and she was down to 7/2 a few minutes before post. She placed, paying $7.40 and $4.00.
I here getting turf workouts is tough!

Do not see many 1st time routers win but have seen a few,
usually on turf and with a good turf jockey and good trainer.

good thought process. The connections are excited (this is the one!) and hit hard to win. The masses are too afraid to bet big across-the-board("this could be a pig-think Padua"). Butif it's overbet forget about it.

.... almost never will I touch a 1st timer at anything other than a one turn race.. I dont understand why trainers start any horse in their 1st race further than a one turn race... too much for me!!! Even if they are born to route.. get that one turn race in first -- fitness and experience for the next event going longer.
