View Full Version : Curlin's Prix de L'Arc Bid

What an ambitious target connections have set for Curlin.
Whether he takes to the turf is still in question, even after today's
promising work.
No U.S. runner has come close to winning the race, held on the first
Sunday in October, usually on a soft turf track at Longchamps.
There have only been a handful of attempts to win Europe's richest
race originating from over here. Tom Rolfe was probably the best to try it.
Maybe Delta remembers how good that one might have been....it was before my time.
It will be interesting to see how Curlin races on grass later this month.
The 14-1 odds on offer seem high from our viewpoint, because we all know how good Curlin is. But so do the Euro bookies, as they are quite familiar with his brilliance in the BC Classic, and in Dubai.
They realize how tough it will be for Curlin to adapt to a different game.
But, if he fires a nice race on his turf debut, especially on a surface with some give in it, watch out Europe!
I will be in Ireland for a couple of weeks in August.
If he looks the real deal on the turf, and connections are still keen to travel, then I will be paying a visit to a bookmaker, or two, over there
to get down on Curlin for the Arc, hopefully at 10-1, or higher!
Go Curlin!!!

WELL I WOULD SAY THAT "CARRY BACK" WAS A TAD BETTER THAN "TOM" WAS.."TOM" HAD JUST FINISHED WINNING 4 STAKES IN A ROW AT ARLINGTON PARK WITH THE LAST ONE BREAKING THE TRACK RECORD. THOSE 4 WINS WERE ACCOMPLISHED IN ABOUT 56 DAYS (I THINK). & THEN HE WENT OVER THERE & GOT BEAT 16 LENGTHS BUT FINISHED 6TH IN A 20 HORSE FIELD ...HE WENT OFF AT AROUND 8-1.."TOM" WAS THE 3YR CHAMPION..HE WAS A REAL NICE COLT>>REAL NICE..LATER ON THEY WERE GETTING HIM READY FOR THE WASHINGTON DC TURF INTERNATIONAL @ LAUREL & IT WAS LIFE OR DEATH FOR HIM TO GET UP & WIN THAT PREP.HE WENT OFF AT .30 CENTS ON A DOLLAR THAT DAY WITH SHOEMAKER UP.THE PURSE IN THAT RACE WAS $6500..13 DAYS LATER HE WENT IN THE WASH INTERNATIONAL & FINISHED 6TH BEATEN ABOUT 9 LENGTHS..HE NEVER RAN AGAIN..
SHOEMAKER RODE HIM 13 TIMES.THE GREAT "FRANK WHITELY TRAINED HIM.I AM WRITING ALL THIS TO MAKE MY POINT..AS I SAID WEEKS AGO>IF CURLIN WERE MINE I WOULDNT LET HIM SEE THE GRASS ONLY TO GRAZE ON IT.NEVER TO RACE ON IT..THERE ARE GRASS HORSES & DIRT HORSES AS YOU ALL KNOW..EAST IS EAST & WEST IS WEST & NEVER SHALL THE TWAIN MEET..NOW CURLIN COULD WIN BUT I WOULDNT JEOPARDIZE A HORSE LIKE CURLIN TO DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT THAT HE HASNT DONE BEFORE..WHY LOOK FOR TROUBLE WHEN HE IS ALREADY WORTH ABOUT 80 MILLION.

12/1 Or 14/1 On Curlin Would Not Be An Overlay.imho--he Would Have A Lot Of Things Going Against Him.
1--running The Oppositte Way And Learning To Change Leads Isnt Easy.
2--the Course Over The Pond Is Always Soft, nothing Like The Turf Courses Over Here
3--its Highly Unlikely That He Could Switch All His Talent From Dirt To Turf At This Stage Of The Game.
The Japanese Horse Deep Impact Couldnt Win Over Their And That Says A Lot.

I think you make some good points here. I still think pace makes the race no matter where and on what though, pace and a bad ride by Take beat Deep Impact. #3 All he has to do is like turf, and his talent will sort through the rest IMO. If he is 12 or 14/1 I'm busting open my piggy bank to play him, I don't care what the pace is or who is in there.... Curlin at 14/1 running against a ferrari, I'm taking that bet. The price is something couldn't pass on. I would guess Curlin will be 3 or 4/1 instead.

Thanks for the input, Delta....
I agree with you that it could be seen as foolhardy, attempting to do something totally different with the horse. But, in this day and age of retiring colts as 3 year olds before reaching their full potential as racehorses, you have to admire their courage, and faith in the horse.
That being said, though, it's odds against Curlin going to post in Paris
on the first Sunday in October. Time will tell......

I totally agree with you Nijinsky. Very well put, and we should all be grateful to the owners for trying to do something monumental with Curlin. They want to give him the opportunity to be one of the great champions of all time. Winning the Arc? Are you kidding me? How amazing would that be?!! The Arc is the biggest race in the world IMO (moreso than any BC race or Dubai World Cup) and that would be astounding if the big boy could go over there and win it, or even run a good showing.
I think it is exciting, but obviously businesswise it is unnecessary (as Delta spoke of). But who cares about that, I am using this forum to publicly thank the owners and connections of Curlin for taking a shot at this. I hope he kicks butt.

Just a question to Delta, how hard would it be to teach Curlin to run the opposite direction.I would think that after all the years of racing one way it would be hard to switch. Then if you could train him to go that way could he be brought back to the U.S. and go back to the dirt?

THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS WHEN GOING INTO A TURN HE MUST CHANGE TO HIS RIGHT LEAD GOING CLOCKWISE..GOING COUNTER CLOCKWISE A RUNNER MUST CHANGE TO HIS LEFT LEAD.IF ONE DOESNT CHANGE LEADS INTO THE TURN & FINDS HIM OR HERSELF ON THE WRONG LEAD THEY WILL BECOME MORE TIRED THRU THE STRAIGHT RUNNING ON SAME LEAD THRUOUT..SOME HORSES CAN ADAPT WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS>SOME CANT..I AM SURE CURLIN WILL HAVE NO PROBLEM. STEVE,SCOTT, & ROBBIE WILL FIND OUT PRETTY QUICK..IF THEY DO GO OVER THERE & COME BACK, "CURLIN WILL HAVE NO PROBLEM WHAT SO EVER RUNNING ON THE DIRT..
HORSES THAT DONT CHANGE THEIR LEADS CAN BE SORE IN SOME SORT OF MANNER..THAT IS MY OPINION..
WHEN I WAS TRAINING, I ALWAYS LIKE TO SEND THE COLTS & GELDINGS THE WRONG WAY IN THE MORNING JOGING 2 TO 4 MILES & HOBBY HORSING OTHER TIMES 2 MILES..I HAVE ALSO TRAINED HORSES IN THE MORNING BAREFOOT & SOMETIMES BARFOOT IN A RACE BUT U HAVE TO GET PERMISSION FROM THE STEWARDS TO DO THAT..BACK IN THE YESTERYEAR THE STEWARDS WERE PRETTY SHARP..TODAY I CANT SAY THE SAME THING!
A FEW ARE..THATS ALL FOLKS bh)

Thats why I asked you about the opposite direction,I knew alot of trainers jogged the horses the opposite way because the horse doesnt associate that direction with going all out.I just wonder if Assmussen jogs him the opposite way in training?

#1 When Going The Wrong Way In The Morning U All Have To Be On The Extreme Outside.
#2 I Would Think Robby Would Put Him On The Outside..in The Belmont Idiot Robby Had Him In The 1 Path Down The Stretch When All The Other JockS Knew That The Rail Was Not The Place To Be..thats The Difference Of Loosing By A Nose Or Winning Or By 1/2 Length Or Better ..
I Still Wouldnt Take Curlin To The "uk"..even If He Wins..its A Stupid Egotistical Mind Set..i Would Say Its Jess Jackson>not Steve..

That was a good prep race for Curlin. I've never seen three Breeder Cup winners finish 1-2-3 in a race before. In the Arc, it might be time to throw Robby under the bus and try to get the best...Johnny Murtagh. Why can't Curlin run in the Arc and come back and run in the Breeders Cup? Classic or Turf.

Curlin might be distance limited. Both times over a 1 ¼ mile he came in second. He just didn’t look like himself most of the race, could have been something to do with the rider. Red Rocks has matured nicely. They were running on the hard stuff yesterday, over there the lawn will most likely be much softer. Will Red Rocks go in the L’Arc? Lot more things to think about now. If they still want to do something that has never been done before with the horse they can go to the Breeder’s Cup and if they win, go again next year for the Hat Trick.
Horses come out of the L’Arc and run in Breeder’s Cup Races every year, no reason at all he couldn’t run in both, win or lose, except for maybe quarantine reasons. No horse has won the L’Arc and Won a Breeder’s Cup race. Dylan Thomas won the L’Arc and finished 5th in the Breeder’s Cup Turf last year.
Who will be horse of the year if Curlin and Brown both bomb again?

There is talk now of another chance for Curlin on the turf.
Seems to me, they should have learned their lesson this past Saturday.
It was not a bad performance...the top 3 finishers all ran their race.
Red Rocks may have even ran a career best but, to say that Curlin will
improve off this, and have a shot at Europe's best on the lawn, is pretty
far fetched. There have to be at least half a dozen better horses right now over there than Red Rocks going 10-12 furlongs on turf.
They should prepare Curlin for the Jockey Club Gold Cup, and retire him a winner. I admire the braveness of their attempt at turf success, but the horse did just about the best he could in the Man O' War, and it just won't
cut it in the Prix de l'Arc.......
