I would have said Platcher, if it was a quality enough horse to ship areound, but you said "first horse", so my amswer would be our own Tom Schell of McSchell racing, Inc. without hesitation. He will make me a profit and treat them right!

These guys run factories. If a horse can't cut the regimen (or they break one down) - there's another one in the wings waiting to take the stall.

They are all good trainers, but they pretty much have an untlimited stock of the best horses in America.

Its funny but when I voted I expected to be in the minority ...I too like so many before me did not selected a listed trainer.. You first must decide where your horse is going to run... If it were Tampa Bay Downs I would try for Ray Tamargo, Ziadie,Scott or O'Connell.. ...Mott or Dutrow in New York..Suffolk John Riggatieri.....Delaware .. Sam Cronk or Frank Generazio and perhaps Asmussen with something special for Churchill,Arlington...Out west is another story interesting question....Probably not a high profile trainer,,, I beleive in rooting for the underdog

DUTROW is my choice.. just a slight edge because of the outrageous improvements he made with horses like Saint Liam, pushing them from good to excellent and always SHARP!::;

When You have as many Horses as Pletcher does, You are going to be a leading Trainer. What about the trainers who's percentages are higher in the Money. Isn't that what racing is all about. I like to play Owner/Trainer and Trainer/Jockey with percentages of 66% in the money or better.
(Klaravich Stables 73% ITM), (Cunningham,Marty,Hauman,Eugene E, 100% ITM). (Jones,Aaron U,Marie D, 100% ITM). Just a couple of Owners to watch for.

Richard Mandella who I think is the best. I've always liked him, but after watching the "On the Muscle" DVD my horse could not be in better care.

I would choose Michael Matz. Give me an up and comer who has a stable that he can actually have his hands on at all times. A guy who knows where to put his horses to actually have a shot at winning while at the same time giving his horses a chance to mature and improve with each start.

Matz' horses are mainly effective turf horses... I don't know if this is a fluke or his reputation for handling horses with grass pedigree.... I like your idea though.. if you really believe in the upstart trainer....

MATZ IS NOT AN UPSTART OR AN UP & COMING TRAINER..HE HAS BEEN AROUND A LONG TIME..HE IS MARRIED TO A GRAND DAUGHTER OF AT ONE TIME THE LARGEST STABLE AND FARM IN THE WORLD..THE "KING RANCH" OWNED BY ROBT J KLEBERG OF TEXAS AND THE SIZE OF THE RANCH WAS 1 MILLION ACRES.THEY WON THE DERBY WITH MIDDLEGROUND IN 1950..THEY HAD ALL STAKE HORSES..THE TRAINER WAS MAX HIRSCH..THEY ALSO WON THE TRIPLE CROWN WITH ASSAULT IN 1946.MR KLEBERG HAD ONE OF HIS DAUGHTERS MARRY AN "ALEXANDER" AND SHE IS STILL VERY PROMINENT IN RACING TODAY...THIS IS A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT by Deltasports

what i think was being discussed is selecting a trainer with a limited number of horses so that he/she could devote all his/her expertise to that particular animal. Obviously, he's not new, but on the "national scale," he is a relative unknown.. that's what I was referring to; of course guys like you and I know who he is, but most really don't know that much about him. Like Joe Cain isn't new, but I consider him an 'up and comer' if he ever gets good stock.

I have to add that if I were to choose an East Coast trainer it would be either Bill Mott or Jonathan Sheppard again from seeing a dvd set called "Thoroughbred Trainers . . .Unbridled with Susan Kayne".

All youguys have selected "Top" trainers,Who will break you in a heartbeat, With there huge day rate to be able to oversee all the overhead!!You are forgetting a very important thing in training, Like MS says you want a trainer who will treat your horse as a individual...NOT a number. When a trainer has a big stable, Horses are treated either make it or break it as there is another to fill the stall. A small guy who has a limited supply of owners and stalls will be more hands on.When the outfit gets too large, You have to depend on someone else.

Totally agree with you. I have had both type of trainers. Right now I use a trainer named Molly Pearson and she has over 50 horses in her barn and I feel like a number. I had a smaller trainer named Dennis Hall who would only do about 6 horses and I liked the personal attention alot better. I also like the fact that he works his own horses and has a better understanding of each horse.
